Recalls: Hyundai NF Sonata
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Hyundai NF Sonata
2005 Hyundai NF Sonata: ESC causes deceleration
In July 2005, a recall was issued for Hyundai NF Sonata vehicles due to premature activation of the electronic stability control system when driving at speeds of 40-60 km/h uphill through moderate corners, causing the vehicle to decelerate. This was due to over-sensitive operation of the electronic stability control sensor (PRA 2005/7912).
2005-06 Hyundai NF Sonata: brake lamp may not illuminate
In August 2009, a recall was issued for Hyundai NF Sonata vehicles manufactured between 20 September 2006 and 25 October 2006 so that a brake lamp switch could be replaced. The switch could experience an open circuit that would prevent the brake lamp from illuminating (PRA 2009/11018).The recalled vehicles were in the following VIN ranges:
- KMHET41CR6A292327 to KMHET41CR6A298740;
- KMHEU41CR6A303390 to KMHEU41CR6A304129;
- KMHET41CR7A292590 to KMHET41CR7A311422;
- KMHEU41CR7A296816 to KMHEU41CR7A305578; and,
- KMHEU41FR7A277662 to KMHEU41FR7A302608.
Hyundai NF Sonata: ABS circuit board could short circuit
In February 2018, a recall was issued for Hyundai NF Sonata vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the ABS circuit board could short circuit when exposed to water and this posed a potential fire hazard. To fix, a new power circuit board kit was to be installed. For the VINs of the recalled Hyundai NF Sonata vehicles, please see PRA 2018/16634.

Hyundai NF Sonata Diesel: engine hesitation and intake noise
In June 2008, Hyundai issued a technical bulletin for Hyundai NF Sonata vehicles with diesel engines that may experience engine hesitation and intake noise caused by the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. For these vehicles, the engine control module (ECM) was to be updated with new software.
Hyundai NF Sonata Diesel: lack of power
There have been reports of Hyundai NF Sonata vehicles with diesel engines experiencing:
- Illumination of the check engine light;
- The engine not revving; or
- The engine lacking power.
These symptoms may be caused by the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve sticking.
2007-09 Hyundai NF Sonata 2.4L: transmission update
In May 2010, Hyundai USA issued technical service bulletin 10-AT-007-1 for Hyundai NF Sonata vehicles that had 2.4-litre petrol engines and were manufactured from 17 December 2007 to 10 May 2009. For these vehicles, an update was issued for the ECM and TCM software to improve:
- Acceleration feel from stop or below 22 km/h; and,
- Shift quality when decelerating from around 50 km/h when the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) was cold.
Hyundai NF Sonata: automatic transmission faults
- The Sonata’s automatic transmission may not work in reverse gear due to maladjustment of the shift linkage (or transmission cable) between the gearshift selector and the transmission.
- For automatic transmissions that do not shift out of park, the key lock control module may have failed.
- Transmission fluid may leak from: 1) the front pump seal at the torque converter, requiring replacement of the pump seal; or, 2) the reduction brake piston cover, requiring replacement of two O-rings.
Hyundai NF Sonata 3.3 V6: accelerator pedal sensor
For Hyundai NF Sonata models with the 3.3-litre V6 engine, if the ‘check engine’ light illuminates and engine performance is reduced, the accelerator pedal sensor may be faulty.
Hyundai NF Sonata: other problems and faults
- Oil may leak from the transaxle at the oil seals, yet appear to be a seam leak.
- A ‘snap’ noise when shifting from reverse to drive may require an isolation washer on the front hub.
- The ‘low tyre pressure’ warning light may illuminate due to electromagnetic interference from electronic transmitters, but will usually go out when moving out of range. However, some electronic devices may also activate the warning light if they are plugged into the accessory power outlet.
- On vehicles with climate control air conditioning, the displayed temperature may be up to 5 degrees out from the actual outside temperature if the temperature sensor is faulty.
