Recalls: Kia SL Sportage
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Kia SL Sportage
2011-12 Kia SL Sportage: tensioning cable in seatbelt pre-tensioner not crimped
In January 2014, a recall was issued for Kia SL Sportage vehicles that were manufactured between 23 August 2011 and 31 March 2012. In these vehicles, the tensioning cable in the seatbelt pretensioner assembly was not securely crimped. As such, the tensioning cable may be unleashed and cause injury to an occupant of the vehicle. Furthermore, if the cable were to break during pretensioner deployment, the cable would not be able to restrain the occupant to its full capacity. For a list of the vehicles by VIN, please see PRA 2014/13960.
2011 model year Kia SL Sportage Diesel: potential leak from fuel feed hose
In August 2017, a recall was issued for 2011 model year Kia SL Sportage vehicles that had Euro 5 emissions compliant ‘R’ diesel engines. In these vehicles, the fuel feed hose may exhibit premature deterioration of its fatigue-resistance and oil-proofing properties. As such, the fuel feed hose may leak – this could pose a hazard to road users and a fire hazard. For the VINs of the recalled Kia SL Sportage vehicles, please see PRA 2017/16224.
2014-15 Kia SLe Sportage: Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may short circuit
In January 2023, recall campaign 220S39 was issued for 2014-15 Kia SLe Sportage vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may short circuit if the components were exposed to moisure. This could result in an engine compartment fire, even when the vehicle was switched off, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and bystanders, and the risk of damage to property. Furthermore, the HECU was responsible for the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) System and Traction Control System – these systems could also be disabled by a short circuit. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005597.
2011-15 Kia SL Sportage: potential engine noise and seizure
In August 2023, recall campaign 230047 was issued for 2011-15 Kia SL Sportage vehicles. If these vehicles were continuously operated without inspection, the engine may make an abnormal noise and potentially seize. This condition could cause a sudden loss of motive power (i.e. drive) and/or a vehicle fire. This condition also increased the risk of a collision; injury to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders; and property damage. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005724.
