Recalls: Kia UM Sorento
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

2019 Kia UM Sorento: FCA software error and absence of braking assistance
In December 2019, recall campaign 191139 was issued for Kia UM Sorento vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 26 February 2019 to 24 December 2019. Due to an error in the Frontal Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) software, it may fail to recognise a stationary vehicle or a pedestrian. If this occurred, the braking assist function may not activate during a frontal collision and this increased the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/18076.
2014-20 Kia UM Sorento: Heater Core Element could cause fire
In June 2022, recall campaign 221023 was issued for 2015-21 Kia QL Sportage vehicles. Due to a software issue, the Heater Core Element may operate at a higher than intended temperature – this could cause damage to the connector and, potentially, a vehicle fire. A vehicle fire posed a risk of injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) control unit software was to be updated, the Heater Core Element and its connector inspected and, if damaged, replaced. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005443.
2015 Kia UM Sorento: gear shifter could move to park without the brake needing to be depressed
In September 2022, a recall campaign was issued for 2015 Kia UM Sorento vehicles. For these vehicles, the shift lock holder may not meet specifications – this could result in the shift lock mechanism not returning to the locked position, such that the gear selector could be moved from park without depressing the brake pedal. If the gear selector was unintentionally moved out of park without depressing the brake pedal, it could result in the vehicle rolling away – this posed a risk of injury to occupants, road users and bystanders. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005520.
