Review: Hyundai TG.I Grandeur (2006-08)

Overview

Released in February 2006, the Hyundai TG Series I (TG.I) Grandeur was a large, front-wheel drive sedan. Manufactured in Asan, South Korea, Grandeur was powered by a 3.8-litre all-alloy V6 petrol engine that was mated to a five-speed ‘Selectronic’ automatic transmission with a sequential shift mode was fitted as standard. Furthermore, the TG.I Grandeur range consisted of an unnamed, entry-level variant and the better-equipped Limited.

G6DA engine

The 3.8-litre G6DA ‘Lambda’ V6 petrol engine had an aluminium engine block and cylinder head, double overhead camshafts (per cylinder bank), four valves per cylinder, continuously variable intake valve timing (CVVT), a variable intake manifold and a compression ratio of 10.4:1.

Dimensions and body

Compared to the XG300 Grandeur , the TG Grandeur was 30 mm longer (at 4895 mm), 40 mm wider (1865 mm), 70 mm taller (1490 mm) and had a 30 mm longer wheelbase (2780 mm). Furthermore, the chassis achieved a 68 per cent increase in bending stiffness, while the body itself had a coefficient of drag of 0.29.

Suspension

The Grandeur had double wishbone front suspension and independent, multi-link rear suspension. The suspension was also specifically calibrated for the Australian market.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the TG Grandeur included dual front airbags, front and rear side (thorax) airbags, full length curtain airbags, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control, traction control, active front seat head restraints, anti-submarining front seat steel pans and rear seat ramps and front seatbelts with double-pretensioners and load limiters. The Grandeur had 303 mm front and 284 mm rear disc brakes.

Features

Standard features for the TG.I Grandeur included 17-inch ten-spoke alloy wheels with 235/55 tyres, an eight speaker Infinity sound system with subwoofer, external amplifier, MP3-compatibility and a six-disc CD player, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, leather seats, power adjustable front seats (including ten-adjustment for the driver’s seat), cruise control, reverse parking sensors, 60/40 split and folding rear seats, remote central locking, power windows and mirrors, automatically dipping door mirrors when reversing, a rake adjustable steering wheel, two 12 volt power outlets, a trip computer and an immobiliser.

Beyond this, the Grandeur Limited added automatic xenon headlights with washers, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, heated door mirrors, power tilt/slide sunroof, rear window sunshade, reactive solar glass and driver memory settings (for the seat, mirror and steering wheel positions).

Review: Hyundai TG.II Grandeur (2008-11)

Overview

Released in November 2008, the TG Series II (TG.II) Grandeur introduced a revised range and subtle facelift. As part of the TG.II update, a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine was introduced and the Limited variant was discontinued.

Visually, the TG.II Grandeur could be identified by its new 17-inch alloy wheel designs, chrome grille, chrome bumper inserts, bodyside mouldings and door mirrors with indicators. Inside, there was a new instrument cluster, display screen and blue backlit controls.

D4EB-G Engine

The 2.2-litre D4EB-G ‘D’ engine had a cast iron block, common-rail direct injection, a Garrett GTB1549V variable geometry turbocharger, single overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 17.3:1.

Safety equipment

Compared to the TG.I Grandeur, safety equipment was unchanged.

Features

Standard features for the TG.II Grandeur were comparable with the ‘Limited’ variant of the TG.I Grandeur, although the xenon headlights, power sunroof and rear blinds were omitted. The sound system, however, was upgraded with an eight speaker JBL unit with auxiliary jack, USB port and iPod integration; Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity was also made standard.

June 2010: Grandeur update

In June 2010, the TG.II Grandeur underwent a minor cosmetic update; these models were distinguished by their new seven-spoke alloy wheels, black-bezel headlights, revised front bumper and grille, black mesh lower airdam, new fog lights, rear bumper and tail lights. Inside, the centre console had a metallic finish.
