Dimensions and body

Sharing its P1 platform with the Peugeot A9 208 on which it was based, the 2008 was 197 mm longer (at 4159 mm) and 96 mm taller (1556 mm), but width (1739 mm) and wheelbase length (2538 mm) were unchanged. Cargo capacity for the 2008 was 410 litres, though this increased to 1400 litres when the rear seats were folded down.

Suspension

The Peugeot 2008 had MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear axle (both with coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers).

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the Peugeot 2008 included dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control and front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters.

Euro NCAP testing

Since the Peugeot 2008 was almost structurally identical to the Peugeot 208 , test results for the 208 were applied to the 2008 where the tests had not significantly changed since 2012. As such, Euro NCAP awarded the 2008 a five star safety rating which included an 88 per cent adult occupant protection rating and a 77 per cent child occupant protection rating. In the offset crash test, protection of the driver’s head, thighs, knees and feet were rated as good, though chest and lower leg protection were rated as adequate. In the offset crash test, protection of the driver’s head and abdomen were rated as good, though chest protection was again rated as adequate. In the more severe pole test, chest protection was rated as marginal.

Under ANCAP’s methodology , this testing resulted in a five star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 34.03 out of 37.

Review: Peugeot A94.II 2008 (2016-18)

Overview

Officially released in Australia in February 2017, the Peugeot A94 Phase II (A94.II) 2008 introduced a new 1.2-litre ‘PureTech e-THP’ engine which could shut down when the Peugeot 2008 was stationary to reduce fuel consumption (i.e., ‘Stop & Start’). As standard, the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine was mated to a six-speed Aisin transmission.

The revised Peugeot 2008 range consisted of Active, Allure and GT-Line editions. Visually, the Peugeot A94.II 2008 could be identified by its new multi-faceted grille with central Peugeot Lion, headlights and LED tail-lights with a ‘lion claw’ design.

Safety equipment

For the Peugeot A94.II 2008 Allure and GT-Line, standard safety equipment was extended to include Peugeot’s ‘Active City Brake’. Operating at speeds under 30 km/h, Active City Brake used a LIDAR-based radar that was mounted on the windscreen (in front of the rear vision mirror) to monitor the road ahead. The driver would receive warnings if a collision hazard was detected and, if the driver failed to respond, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) would be initiated. For initial vehicle speeds below 15 km/h, collisions could be prevented; for initial speeds between 15 km/h and 30 km/h, the severity of the collision would be reduced.

From October 2017, Active City Brake was fitted as standard across the Peugeot 2008 range.

Features: Peugeot 2008 Active, Allure and GT-Line

Compared to the Peugeot A94.I 2008 Active, standard features for the A94.II 2008 Active were extended to include power folding door mirrors and ‘Mirror Screen’ which provided Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link smartphone integration. Whereas the A94.I 2008 Active had a dealer-fitted reverse camera, the A94.II 2008 Active had a factory-fitted unit.

Compared to the Peugeot A94.II 2008 Active, the 2008 Allure was further equipped with 17-inch ‘Eridan’ alloy wheels with 205/50 R17 tyres, a satellite navigation system, combination ‘Oxford’ synthetic leather and cloth seat trim, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, directional front fog lights, dusk-sensing headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front parking sensors, an electrochromatic rear view mirror and rear privacy glass.

The 2008 Allure and GT-Line were also fitted with Peugeot’s ‘Grip Control’ traction control system and ‘City Park’ which provided automated steering for parallel parking manoeuvres while the driver controlled vehicle speed.

The Peugeot 2008 GT-Line was distinguished by its ‘Dynamic’ TEP and mesh cloth seat trim, a smooth leather steering wheel wrap with red stitching, alloy door sills, alloy sports pedals, red LED instrument panel surround and red interior highlights (for the door handles, seatbelts and handbrake). Visually, the Peugeot 2008 GT-Line could be identified by its Perla Nera black exterior highlights (for the roof rails, rear door trim, spoiler and mirror shells), gloss black grille surround with red ‘Peugeot’ lettering, unique rear bumper and chrome exhaust tip.
