Overview

Australian production of the Toyota XV40 Camry Hybrid commenced in December 2009 and it was officially released in February 2010. Manufactured in Altona, Victoria, the Toyota XV40 Camry Hybrid was powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine (Toyota’s 2AZ-FXE ) and a 650 volt electric motor which drew power from a nickel metal hydride battery pack.

Fitted with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the petrol engine would shut down and almost seamlessly restart when required. Kinetic energy not required for propulsion was converted to electricity a gear lever enabled the driver to select ‘B’ for an engine braking mode. The Hybrid Camry also had an electric-only mode which enabled the vehicle to travel up to 2 km without the petrol engine).

Comparison with XV40 Camry

The Hybrid Camry was also fitted with an acoustic windscreen, electric power steering and retuned suspension to cope with the additional 150 kg of weight imposed by the hybrid powertrain. As a result of its nickel metal hydride battery pack, boot space was reduced from 460 litres to 389 litres.
