Overview

Released in November 2011, the Volkswagen Mk.6 Golf Cabriolet was a four-seat convertible with a soft-top roof. The VW Mk.6 Golf Cabriolet was initially available with a 1.4-litre turbo and supercharged petrol engine (the ‘118TSI’ variant) mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed double clutch transmission.

The Volkswagen Mk.6 Golf Cabriolet was 4337 mm long, 1782 mm wide, 1423 mm tall and had a 2577 mm long wheelbase. Furthermore, the Golf Cabriolet had MacPherson strut front suspension and independent, multi-link rear suspension. Compared to the VW Mk.6 Golf hatchback , the Golf Cabriolet had additional reinforcement which increased kerb weight by 94 kg to 1424 kg.

The Mk.6 Golf Cabriolet’s fully-automated, electro-hydraulic soft-top roof consisted of a roof liner, insulating filler layer and an external cover; the roof could be lowered in nine seconds and raised in eleven seconds (at speeds of up to 30 km/h).

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the VW Mk.6 Golf Cabriolet included dual front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, front seat-mounted head/thorax airbags, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters and automatically deploying rollover hoops.

Euro NCAP crash testing

In Euro NCAP testing , the Golf Cabriolet received a five star safety rating which included a 96 per cent adult occupant protection rating and an 86 per cent child occupant protection rating. In the frontal offset impact test, there was a slight risk of serious chest and leg injury for the driver. Furthermore, maximum points were awarded in the side impact and pole tests. Under ANCAP’s methodology , this testing produced an adult occupant protection score of 35.16 out of 37.

Features

Standard Golf Cabriolet features included 17-inch alloy wheels with sports suspension, a six speaker sound system with CD player, MP3-compatibility and auxiliary inputs (3.5mm/USB/iPod), dual-zone climate control air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, front and rear fog lights, a cooled glovebox, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, 50/50 split and folding rear seats, remote central locking, power windows and heated mirrors, a tilt and reach adjustable steering wheel, height adjustable front seats, green-tinted thermal insulating glass, an electrochromatic rear view mirror, 12 volt power outlet, trip computer and an immobiliser. The Mk.6 Golf Cabriolet also had a glass rear window with demister.

August 2013: Golf Cabriolet update

In August 2013, standard features for the Mk.6 Golf Cabriolet were extended to include a new audio system with a six-disc CD player and memory card reader, synthetic leather seat trim, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and park assist display.
