2009-10 Lexus XF40 LS 460 and LS 600hL: steering wheel could go off-centre

In May 2010, a recall was issued for Lexus LS 460 and LS 600hL models due to a condition in which the steering wheel could become off-centre by up to 90 degrees under certain driving conditions, such as U-Turns or accelerating quickly following a sharp turn. If the driver fully turned the steering wheel to full lock and then attempted to quickly turn it back to the centre position, the wheel may become temporarily off-centred before automatically returning to the centre position within 1 to 5 seconds (PRA 2010/11670). The recalled vehicles were as follows:

In October 2014, a recall was issued for Lexus XF40 LS 460 and LS 600hL vehicles. In these vehicles, the sealing property of the gasket between the fuel pressure sensor and the fuel delivery pipe could degrade over time – if this occurred, fuel may leak and pose a fire hazard. If the owner detected a smell of fuel either inside or outside the vehicle, Lexus recommended that the driver immediately stop driving the vehicle and contact their nearest Lexus Dealer for diagnosis and repair (PRA 2014/14385). The recalled vehicles had the following VINs and production dates –

  • LS 460: JTH BL46F # 5053407 to JTD BL46F # 05099058 (produced from 22 August 2007 to 9 June 2010); and,

2013-15 Lexus XF40 LS 460, LS 600h and LS 600hL: low-pressure fuel pump may stop working

In April 2020 and November 2020, recall campaigns VGG17 and VGG05 were issued for Lexus XF40 LS 460, LS 600h and LS 600hL vehicles that were manufactured from September 2013 to February 2015. In these vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could stop operating – if this occurred, the engine may stall and the vehicle may not restart; alternatively, the engine may not run smoothly. Beyond this, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel. To fix, the low-pressure fuel pump was to be replaced. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18243.

Lexus XF40 LS: hesitation on acceleration & DTC P2119

In June 2008, Lexus issued Service Bulletin L-SB-003-08 Rev2 for the following:

  • 2007-12 Lexus XF40 LS 460 vehicles; and,
  • 2008-12 Lexus XF40 LS 600h vehicles.

These vehicles may experience hesitation on acceleration and, in some cases, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P2119 (Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/Performance) may be logged. To rectify this condition, a new calibration was developed for the engine control module (ECM). In some instances, however, the cylinder heads may require replacement. For further information, please refer to the service bulletin.

Lexus XF40 LS 460 and LS 600h: engine won’t start or stalls on start-up

In November 2008, Lexus issued Service Bulletin L-SB-0161-08 Rev1 for 2007-08 Lexus LS 460 and 2008 Lexus LS 600h vehicles. Intermittently, the engine may not start or may start and immediately stall after the ‘Push Start’ button is pressed. A new ‘Push Start’ switch was introduced to fix this problem.

Lexus XF40 LS 600h: transfer case vibration when turning

In April 2011, Lexus issued Service Bulletin L-SB-0023-11 for 2008-10 model year Lexus XF40 LS 600h vehicles with VINs preceding JTHDU##F#A5011228. In these vehicles, the transfer case may shudder or vibrate when the vehicle is turning at slow speeds. To fix, the transfer case oil was to be replaced with part no. 08885-81085 three times, with 2 km drives between fills.

Lexus XF40 LS 460: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner noise

In December 2008, Lexus issued Service Bulletin L-SB-0164-08 for 2007-08 Lexus XF40 LS 460 vehicles with VINs preceding JTHB4#F*85074011. In these vehicles, an ‘abnormal’ noise may be heard from the engine accessory drive belt area. An improved accessory drive belt tensioner assembly was developed to keep the tensioner pulley in alignment with the other pulleys.

If the tensioner pulley was out of alignment,

  • The drive belt and tensioner assembly were to be removed;
  • The drive belt tensioner assembly replaced; and,
  • The drive belt replaced.

Lexus XF40 LS: brake actuator knocking/clicking noise

In December 2009, Lexus issued Service Bulletin L-SB-0178-09 for 2007-10 Lexus LS 460 and 2008-10 Lexus LS 600h vehicles. These vehicles may emit a knocking and/or clicking noise from the brake actuator during light brake applications when coming to a stop or when depressing the brake pedal when the vehicle was stationary. An improved brake actuator was introduced to correct this condition and could be fitted to affected vehicles.

Lexus XF40 LS: rear view mirror discoloration and stripes

In December 2009, Lexus issued Service Bulletin L-SB-0186-09 for the following:

  • 2007-09 model year Lexus XF40 LS 460 vehicles; and,
  • 2008-09 model year Lexus XF40 LS 600h vehicles.

In these vehicles, the interior rear view mirror glass may be discoloured or have a striped pattern. An improved service part was introduced to fix this condition.

Lexus XF40 LS 460: wind noise from door mirror

In April 2007, Lexus issued Technical Service Information Bulletin NV003-07 for 2007 model year Lexus XF40 LS 460 vehicles. In these vehicles, the driver may experience a high-pitched whistle-type wind noise from the base of the door mirror. A ‘Wind Noise Kit’ was developed to fix this problem and involved two strips of foam being fitted around the outside of screw bosses within the door mirror assembly.

2007 Lexus XF40 LS 460: sticky/melting dashboard

For 2007 Lexus LS 460 vehicles, the polymer which the dashboard is made from may degrade due to sunlight/heat and humidity. As a result, the dashboard surface may:

  • Become sticky to the touch; and,
  • Appear shiny and reflect more light, causing increased glare and impaired visibility.

The driver may also experience a ‘chemical’ smell.

In2014, Toyota and Lexus USA initiated Warranty Enhancement Program ZE6. The specific condition covered by the Warranty Enhancement Program was a cracked and/or sticky/melting dashboard in a covered (i.e. non-convertible) vehicle as a result of heat or humidity. If the condition was verified, the repair would be performed in accordance with the applicable Technical Service Bulletin. For the Warranty Enhancement Program,

  • The ‘Primary Coverage’ extended the warranty until 31 May 2017 regardless of mileage or date of first use of the vehicle; and,
  • The ‘Secondary Coverage’ supplemented the Primary Coverage for some owners by extending the warranty for ten (10) years from the date of first use of the vehicle, regardless of mileage.

Within Australia, there have been instances of owners having had their dashboards replaced free of charge.

Lexus XF40 LS 460: windscreen rattle

In May 2010, Lexus issued Lexus Service Bulletin L-SB-0090-08 Rev 1 for pre-2010 Lexus XF40 LS 460 vehicles. In these vehicles, a creaking, ticking or rattling noise may be heard at the top or bottom of the windscreen. According to the service bulletin, this may be attributable to:

  • The two windscreen stoppers that are bottom to the top of the windscreen; or,
  • The windshield retainers which are bonded to the lower edge of the windscreen.

Lexus XF40 LS 460: noise from auxiliary port with external device

In August 2007, Lexus issued Technical Service Information Bulletin AU001-07 for 2007 model year Lexus XF40 LS 460 vehicles. In these vehicles, there may be a noise in the auxiliary mode of the radio when using an MP3 player or other external audio source connected to the 12 volt power port of the vehicle. An improved auxiliary port and in-line filter were developed to improve this condition. For information on how to install the new in-line filter and auxiliary port, please refer to the service bulletin.

2013 Lexus XF40 LS 460 and LS 600h: won’t start and steering lock engaged

In May 2014, Lexus issued Tech Tip L-TT-0113-13 for 2013 model year Lexus XF40 LS 460 and LS 600h vehicles for the following symptoms:

  • The vehicle would not start or ‘ready-on’; and,
  • The steering wheel lock would be engaged such that the steering wheel could only be turned slightly.

If the driver tried to start or ‘ready-on’ the vehicle while there was tension on the steering lock actuator, it would not be able to fully disengage when the ‘Engine Start Stop’ or ‘Power’ switch was depressed. These circumstances would cause the vehicle message centre to display the ‘Steering Lock Engaged’ error message and the vehicle would fail to start or ‘ready-on’.

To overcome this problem, the driver was to move the steering wheel from side-to-side to relax tension on the steering lock actuator. Once the steering lock actuator was free to disengage, the driver would be able to start or ‘ready-on’ the vehicle the vehicle.

Problems and faults: Lexus XF40 LS

  • When the steering wheel is turned to full lock, there may be noises from the springs – revised springs are available which overcome this problem.
  • The Lexus XF40 LS may not accelerate properly when the ‘brake hold’ feature is activated, requiring the transmission control module to be replaced.
