Honda FD1.I and FD2.I Civic Sedan (2006-09)

Overview

Released in February 2006, the Honda FD1 and FD2 Civics were small, front-wheel drive sedans. Manufactured in Ayutthaya, Thailand, the FD2 Civic was powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (for VTi and VTi-L variants), while the FD1 Civic had a 2.0-litre engine (for Sport variants). As per the table below, the FD1 and FD2 Civics were available with five-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmissions.

Please note that the FK2 Civic Si and FN2 Civic Type R hatchbacks – which were manufactured in Swindon, England – have been reviewed separately.

R18A1 and K20Z2 engines

The 1.8-litre R18A1 engine had a single overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder, a dual stage intake manifold, compression ratio of 10.5:1 and a computer-controlled ‘drive by wire’ throttle system which reduced pumping losses. In contrast, the 2.0-litre K20Z2 engine had double overhead cams, roller rockers to reduce friction and a compression ratio of 9.6:1. Both engines, however, were fitted with Honda’s i-VTEC system which consisted of:

  • Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) which could select from two camshaft profiles for low and high RPM operations; and,
  • Continuously variable timing of camshaft phasing on the intake camshaft (Variable Timing Control or VTC).

Dimensions and suspension

Compared to its ES1 Civic sedan predecessor, the FD1/FD2 Civic was 80 mm longer (at 4550 mm), 35 mm wider (1750 mm), 5 mm taller (1435 mm) and had an 80 mm longer wheelbase (2700 mm). The FD1/FD2 Civic had ‘Control Link’ MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone, multi-link rear suspension.
