Overview

Released in February 1993, the Toyota XV10 Camry was available as a mid-size sedan or wagon. Manufactured in Altona, Victoria, the front-wheel drive XV10.I Camry was powered by 2.2-litre 5S-FE four-cylinder and 3.0-litre 3VZ-FE V6 engines. The XV10 Camry range initially consisted of Executive, CSi and Ultima variants; models with V6 engines also had ‘Vienta’ badges. In April 1994, the Executive variants were discontinued and a new CSX variant was positioned above the CSi. The full range is given in the table below.

5S-FE and 3VZ-FE engines

Of these engines,

  • The 2.2-litre 5S-FE petrol engine had a cast iron block, an alloy cylinder head, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 9.5:1. The 5S-FE was a ‘non-interference’ engine, such that failure of the timing belt did not cause the pistons to strike the valves; and,
  • The 3.0-litre 3VZ-FE petrol engine had a cast iron block, an alloy cylinder head, double overhead camshafts (per cylinder bank), four valves per cylinder, Toyota’s ACIS (Acoustically Controlled Induction System) variable intake system and a compression ratio of 9.6:1.

While the four-cylinder engines were available with five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions, the six-cylinder engines were solely available with the latter.

Dimensions and suspension

The XV10 Camry sedan was 4725 mm long, 1770 mm wide, 1400 mm tall and had a 2620 mm long wheelbase; the wagon models, however, were 70 mm longer (at 4795 mm) and 50 mm taller (1450 mm). Furthermore, the XV10 Camry had MacPherson strut front suspension and independent rear suspension with twin transverse arms.

1995: update and revised range

In April 1995, the four-cylinder Camry models underwent a minor update with new tail-lights (including continuous red elements between the outer lamps for sedans), refreshed interior trim and an immobiliser fitted as standard. In October 1995, the Vienta-badged V6 models were separated from the Camry range and released as an independent model. [su_table responsive=”yes”]

Safety equipment: four-cylinder models

Initially, standard safety equipment for four-cylinder models was limited to a driver’s airbag for Ultima variants. The CSX was fitted with a driver’s airbag from June 1994, though this discontinued in August 1995.

Features: four-cylinder models

Standard features for the four-cylinder Camry Executive included a two speaker stereo with a radio and cassette player, power mirrors and a height adjustable steering wheel.

The Camry CSi was further equipped with a four speaker sound system and central locking, while the Camry CSX added a six speaker sound system, cruise control and power windows. From August 1995, the CSX was also fitted with air conditioning as standard.

Compared to the CSX, the Camry Ultima added 14-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and an alarm system.

From April 1995, the four-cylinder models were fitted with an engine immobiliser as standard.

Safety equipment: Vienta V6 models

For variants with V6 engines, the CSi, CSX and Ultima were all fitted with a driver’s airbag as standard.

Features: Vienta V6 models

Standard features for the Camry Vienta Executive included a two speaker stereo with a radio and cassette player, central locking, power mirrors and a height adjustable steering wheel.

The Camry Vienta CSi was further equipped with a four speaker sound system and power mirrors, while the CSX added a six speaker sound system, cruise control and power windows.

The range-topping Camry Vienta Ultima was distinguished by its 15-inch alloy wheels, CD changer, air conditioning and alarm systems.

Camry Vienta Touring

In October 1993, a limited-run Camry Vienta Touring model was released. Compared to the Vienta CSi, the Touring was further equipped with ABS, 15-inch alloy wheels, firmer sports suspension and a CD player.

Camry Getaway and Intrigue

Limited-run Getaway and Intrigue variants were released in October 1996 and April 1997, respectively. Based on the CSi, these variants were further equipped with 14-inch alloy wheels, a CD player and air conditioning.
