Released in April 2004, the Mercedes-Benz W639 Series I (W639.I) Vito Van was a large, rear-wheel drive commercial vehicle that was available in three body styles: Compact, High Roof and LWB. The W639.I Vito Van range initially consisted of three variants: 109 CDI, 115 CDI and 119 P.
Of these variants, the 109 CDI and 115 CDI were powered by 2.1-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines, while the 119 P had a 3.2-litre V6 petrol unit. The 119 P was discontinued in 2006, though the range was subsequently expanded with the introduction of the 120 CDI (in 2007) and the 111 CDI (2008).

Standard safety equipment for the Mercedes-Benz W639 Vito van included a driver’s airbag, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control and front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters.
Euro NCAP crash testing
In Euro NCAP crash testing , a 2008 Mercedes-Benz W639 Viano 2.2 CDI Trend – equipped with dual front airbags – received a four star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 30.66. ANCAP concluded that the right-hand drive Vito, if fitted with dual front airbags, could be expected to provide comparable front occupant protection to the left-hand drive Viano tested by Euro NCAP. In the offset crash test, protection from serious leg injury was marginal for the front occupants. In the side impact test, there was a slight risk of serious chest injury for the driver.
